The Flu Vaccine has arrived

It is important to take the flu vaccine in order to prevent the spread of influenza especially in immune-compromised individuals and the elderly.

How do flu vaccines work?

“Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are in the vaccine.The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. Traditional flu vaccines (called trivalent vaccines) are made to protect against three flu viruses; an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and an influenza B virus. In addition, there are flu vaccines made to protect against four flu viruses (called “quadrivalent” vaccines). These vaccines protect against the same viruses as the trivalent vaccine and an additional B virus.”

Who should get vaccinated?

Anyone over the age of 6 months can be vaccinated. The flu vaccine cannot be given to a person who already has the flu and is thus ill. If you have an allergy to eggs or any of the ingredients in the vaccine. Talk to your pharmacist about your allergy.

If you ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (a severe paralyzing illness, also called GBS). Some people with a history of GBS should not get this vaccine. Talk to your doctor about your GBS history.

Going the extra mile for all our patients

Last week, we assisted a patient with second and third degree burns. The gentleman had an accident at work when the oxygen cylinder he was using exploded. He apparently used the equipment incorrectly. He went to the local clinic for assistance but was sent home with a packet of paracetamol and weak antibiotics. His wounds were dressed incorrectly causing the bandages to stick to his skin. Hence, when he arrived at the pharmacy, it took our staff quite some time to remove the bandages without causing any further damage to the skin. It was quite evident that the oral antibiotics were not working optimally as the wounds were infected with puss. We spent over an hour cleaning out the wound and then called the paramedics to transport him to a hospital where he can be administered with antibiotics via a drip. It makes our blood boil when we see the incompetence at our government hospital facilities. Oh well, as long as Medix pharmacy remains in existence we will try our best to provide the best medical care to all our patients.

A herbal solution to acne that really works

I often get asked by patients, what product can we recommend for acne or problem skin… I have always had skin problems ever since my teenage years and believe it or not a visit to the dermatologist made my skin worse. My staff and I are ardent fans of the Himalaya brand and hence we recommend Purim tablets in conjunction with the Clarina cream to be applied twice a day.The purim detoxifies the body and the clarina removes scars and dries out pimples. I have used both products myself and I have found a significant improvement in my skin. The products have no adverse effects. We recommend that both products should be used for a three month period in order to gain the full maximum benefit of the product.
