Earlier this afternoon, a young woman was riding with her colleagues down Goldman street when suddenly she passed out from an asthmatic attack. She was unable to breathe.. gasping for each breath. Desperately looking for help they stopped at the pharmacy. My colleagues and I carried her out of the vehicle on a stretcher and we quickly nebulized her and connected her to some oxygen. After about an hour she started coming around. She started responding to treatment. At the pharmacy we have a minimal emergency supply of oxygen and thus we knew that even if she came around she still needed to be hospitalized. We called Netcare 911. We were refused help point blank as the lady did not have any medical aid. When we called for a government ambulance firstly no one answered the phone. When we finally got through to someone we were told that there are no ambulances available. Make your own plan to get the patient to the hospital. We then called the Florida park fire department. The operator on duty told us that there are no ambulances available. By now I was damn furious. I was worried that the woman must not have another attack in the pharmacy. My colleague and I got into the car and drove to the Florida Park fire department. Guess what. We counted 12 ambulances parked off. There was a gentleman on duty who realized the seriousness of the situation and was quite appalled at what we were told on the phone. When we returned to the pharmacy the ambulance arrived.. but one hour later from when then the initial call was made. Take note that the Florida park fire department is literally a 4 minute drive from the pharmacy. Another patient who was purchasing his medication during the whole ordeal informed us that his colleague at work died from a heart attack only because the ambulance arrived 2 hours later. The idiot driving the vehicle did not know how the GPS system worked and so they were driving around in circles trying to find the address. Welcome to South Africa folks…….

Happy birthday Raffikki…. May you see many many more……….:)
Rafikki’s story is quite amazing. He was a glue sniffer residing on the streets. He was addicted to a number of other substances as well. When we started renovating Medix Pharmacy, we asked him to help us break down the tiles and remove the rubble. Every day we would badger him to report to work. As time went by, Rafikki started reporting to work on his own. It has been a year now that he is off the streets. His mom and family are over the moon that he is now a changed man. He is now a productive member of society. He started caring for his mother, wife and child. He is now trying to get his friends off the streets as well. Many a times we look down upon street people or hobos..We belittle them and we make them feel lower than us. Did you ever stop to give these people a hearing? Did you ever stop to ask them about their lives or what caused them to take such drastic paths in life. Sometimes just by listening to someone else, showing them a bit of empathy can change a person’s life forever. Smile, be happy.. Wake up in the morning with a zest for life. Wake up wanting to do good. We can’t change the world over night all by ourselves..But we can make a start towards change one step at a time. Rafikki is a fine example of this and all of us at Medix pharmacy are proud to have him as a team member….

There’s never a dull moment at Medix pharmacy… had a patient this morning who walked in with stab wounds.. He was stabbed in Tokoza township whilst delivering bread… Five men armed with knives surrounded him as he disembarked from his vehicle.. They were demanding money. When he refused to hand over the money they stabbed him. He has been stabbed five times now in separate incidents….When he arrived at the pharmacy there was blood everywhere.. he was bleeding profusely… My colleagues and I managed to stabilise him and stop the bleeding. Dr Frank assisted with stitching up the wounds..Within an hour he was all good to go……We reside in a crazy country… lawlessness is the order of the day…Wishing all our customers good health and be safe!!

I am sure that many of you out there must have heard the following statements:" Gosh, I will never get a flu vaccine shot. I took it last year and I got really ill." or "The flu vaccine gives you the flu."
We have thus decided to debunk this very common urban myth and misconception regarding the flu vaccine.
According to numerous vaccine experts world wide, there in no way that a flu vaccine can cause the flu. The reason for this is simple. The flu vaccine contains dead viruses. Hence if something is dead.. Its dead… It can not infect you. Most people usually mistake the side effects of the vaccine for flu. There are also times whereby people take the vaccine and after a few days they do become ill. The illness is due to a different unrelated strain of virus but naturally the flu vaccine is blamed for the sudden onset of flu rather than the close interaction with family, colleagues or friends who are ill with runny noses, nasal congestion, coughing along with other flu symptoms.
As health care professionals we are bombarded by patients on a daily basis demanding antibiotics for the treatment of flu symptoms. Please take note that antibiotics CAN NOT treat any kind of flu. Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. However, there are cases whereby a patient catches a flu and then develops a bacterial infection as well. The flu virus weakens the body’s immune system and hence allows bacteria to invade the body. Many patients are under the notion that they should take an antibiotic just in case a secondary bacterial infection ensues. This type of preventative measure does not work. In fact it only makes matters worse. In the event a patient with a flu takes an antibiotic and later develops a secondary bacterial infection, the patients body would automatically be resistant to the antibiotics.
Tamiflu prescribed by your physician is highly effective against flu symptoms. It works best if it is taken within 48 hours of your first flu symptoms. It is available at Medix pharmacy. Take note that tamiflu does not cure the flu. It simply lessens the number of days that you are ill and also makes you less contagious to others.
NOW THAT WE HAVE DEBUNKED THE MYTH, WHY DON’T YOU MAKE YOUR WAY TO MEDIX PHARMACY THIS COMING SATURDAY TO GET YOURSELF VACCINATED DURING OUR ANNUAL FLU VACCINE CAMPAIGN POWERED BY ABBOTT.
