Peak Flow Meter Testing Services at Medix Pharmacy

Asthma is characterized by an increased inflammation of the bronchial tubes usually coupled with the production of sticky mucous like secretions inside the tubes.Common symptoms of asthma include, chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing especially at night. A peak flow meter is an inexpensive, easy to use, portable device that is utilized to assess how well your lungs are functioning. If you are an asthmatic patient, your physician may recommend you to utilize a peak flow meter device in order to keep track of your asthma control. A peak flow meter can be a useful tool for both adults and children. If you have any of the symptoms above or you are an asthmatic, why don’t you make your way to Medix Pharmacy where one of our trained and qualified staff will assess your lung functioning by a simple peak flow meter test. If you own a peak flow meter and you not sure on how to use the device our staff will be more than willing to teach you or you can simply follow the 8 easy steps below.

  1. Stand up or sit up straight.
  2. Make sure the indicator is at the bottom of the meter (zero).
  3. Take a deep breath in, filling the lungs completely.
  4. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth; lightly bite with your teeth and close your lips on it. Be sure your tongue is away from the mouthpiece.
  5. Blast the air out as hard and as fast as possible in a single blow.
  6. Remove the meter from your mouth.
  7. Record the number that appears on the meter and then repeat steps one through seven two times.
  8. Record the highest of the three readings in an asthma diary. This reading is your peak expiratory flow (PEF).
  9. To ensure the results of your peak flow meter are comparable, be sure to use your meter the same way each time you take a reading.
